Activated alumina and silica gel uses
Activated alumina is a good agent in the water purification process. It can be used at the starting point or at the ending point of the water filtration process. However, many of them doubted the use of activated alumina directly to the water purification process. Then the authorized panel provided instructions regarding this.
According to the European standard testing of activated alumina filter applicable for leaching tests (EN 12902) [6] to ensure that no impurities are leached to the water in quantities. That results in concentrations exceeding the limits set in the absence of relevant limits in that Directive or in Commission Directive 2003/40/EC on the constituents of natural mineral waters, the restrictions set for human consumption or in national applicable legislation in Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended.
Initialization procedure with alkaline or acidic chemicals to remove any impurities and fine particles before the use of the filter. Regeneration procedure with appropriate chemicals to renew the capacity of the activated alumina filter resulting at the same time in the removal of any possibly formed biofilm.
Silica Gel
Silica gel is familiar to everyone. It is a good moisture absorber. There is a lot of different kind of uses with silica gel. It is starting from our kitchen to the big level applications like cargo shipping. For each application, desiccants are available on different packaging sizes.
We can see small silica gel packets with shoe-boxes as well as with laptop bags or inside the medicine bottles. In shoe boxes, silica gel packets are tossing to avoid odor by absorbing moisture. In laptop bags, tossing silica gel to avoid damages of electronic devices by removing water content.
In medicine bottles, silica gel packets are tossing to avoid the spoilage of tablets. Some tablets and medicines will react with moisture content and it will provide the opposite effects. So to avoid this, medicines are sealed in bottles along with silica gel packets.
