   Carabiners are used in secondary or backup systems as part of redundancy. For example, an additional carabiner can be used to attach a second rope to the climber or their equipment, providing a backup in case the primary system fails. The use of multiple carabiners creates a fail-safe arrangement, reducing risk.

   In rope access, workers often need to carry tools, and carabiners provide a reliable method for securing tools to a harness. Carabiners with locking gates can be used to prevent tools from falling while workers are suspended.

- Strength Rating: Always check the carabiner’s strength rating (usually measured in kN, kilonewtons). This ensures it can handle the load you're working with.

- Locking Mechanism: For safety, always use locking carabiners when working in rope access. This prevents accidental openings and ensures a secure connection.

- Correct Orientation: When using a carabiner in a load-bearing position, make sure it is aligned properly, with the spine (the strongest part of the carabiner) facing the load. This maximizes the carabiner’s strength.

- Regular Inspection: Carabiners should be regularly checked for wear, damage, or deformation, especially if they're exposed to harsh conditions like saltwater, high heat, or chemical exposure.

It is not easy to be being hung by two pieces of ropes to perform the jobs. They need something to take rest and relax, also to protect them. This is possible with the help of safety harnesses.

Before speaking about safety harness, we have to know what is rope access. Rope access is a technique which is used to reach to the areas where is difficult to reach in normal ways. For building cleaning and maintenance, we are using different methods such as scaffolding technique, Cradle technique, ..etc.

Why we are using rope access methods is, by using scaffolding and cradle techniques as well, we are unable to reach to some edges and corners of the huge buildings. Also, scaffoldings are very heavy. Tall buildings cannot hold this weight for long time, It can effect the strength of the entire building.

In such situations, rope access methods are very effective. How it can be done is, just by using two pieces of ropes along with necessary mechanical devices (These devices are known as rope access equipment) by the help of qualified rope access technicians.

In rope access methods we are using a lot of innovative equipment to help the technician to perform their job well and to protect them from fall and injuries. Suspending in a rope is very difficult to human being if they are not trained well. Therefore before entering into this industry, they have to attend related courses and should pass certifications.

Pulley is a mechanical device and a part of rope access equipment. However, the pulley has a lot of roles in our daily life. For example in an elevator, multiple pulleys are using to work it properly. Similarly in a cargo lift system, to lift heavy items into higher floors mechanical devices working with pulleys are using.

Pulleys are a part of many types of exercise equipment. In a construction site, we can see lifting vehicles to lift and place heavy materials, they are using no. of pulleys in order to function. A simple example of a pulley is curtains at a theatre.

The curtain mechanism is similar to blinds on windows. To move the blinds up and down, pulley systems are used. When we pull the cord on the blinds, the pulley system connected to it is acting and it causes the blinds to open or close. For the flagpoles also we are using pulleys to hoist the flag up or to bring it down.

Another example of a pulley is it can be used to place birdfeeders high in trees or on poles. By using this pulley system it is easy to pull them down when they need to be refilled or removed. We can see a lot of examples of pulleys around us. They have an important role in our daily life.

The basic model of a pulley is a small grooved wheel used with a rescue rope. In ancient times it was used to take water from dwells. A rope and a bucket connected to a pulley can lift the water from the bottom of the dwells.

Pulleys can be mainly categorized into three. fixed, movable, and compound pulleys. As the name indicates a fixed pulley's wheel and axle stay in one place. The flag pole is an example of a fixed pulley. If we pull down on the rope, it is possible to change the direction of the force. This is an advantage of a pulley mechanism.

Here we share a brief history of rope access. Back in the early 1900s, health and safety were a non-existent concept and construction workers went about their work devoid of ropes or harnesses. It was not a profession for the faint-hearted! Thankfully, we have come a long way since the days of fearless (or crazy) construction workers relying on their own balance to avoid plummeting to their death.

Ropes are available in different sizes. the length is not a matter, we can cut and reduce it. But the diameter is very important while we are choosing the rope for any work. Pulley is an important mechanical device in Rope access equipment. It can be classified as 3. One has a fixed axle, One has a moveable axle, and the other one is a compound, which is a mixture of the other two. These pulleys can be used to provide power from one shaft to another.

In rope access equipment, the use of pulley is also the same. It is used to lift the manpower or other mechanical devices. The rope access system is started in the early 1980s, The technique is originally developed by Cavers. And it is adopted as a rope access system as we know it today. Cavers rope system is using only one rope. But in rope access system we added one more additional rope for working at height.

In the rope access system, this secondary rope is added as safety equipment. One rope is used to hang and hold the person who is using the rope access method, while the other rope is used to protect the person. If something happened unexpectedly, this second rope can secure the person.

Unexpected falls and injuries were common while working at the height. It makes more difficulties to get persons for this job. Even for the employer also, it was difficult. But the rope access system made it is an easy and safe job. Employees were get attracted to this system because the risk of the job becomes less.

Specially designed rope access equipment is used for rope access technique to perform each job very well without any damages and losses. For example, ropes are available as static rope, semi-static rope, and dynamic rope. Each job characteristics are different. Before choosing it, we have to consider our application.

If it is a static rope, there will be no changes in the length or width of the rope after each work. And, by hanging weights, it will not expand, therefore the chances to break the rope are high. If it is a dynamic rope, it is highly elastic. It can expand its length more by hanging the weight.

Therefore we are using semi-static rope for rope access system normally. Because it has a medium level expansion capability. While hanging the weight, it will expand and after removing the weight it will contrast. Therefore semi-static ropes are the most suitable rope for rope access systems.

Generally, a lanyard is a strap to carry something such as keys, identity cards... etc. Lanyards are being used from the earlier time. It has many advantages. It can be any type of cord or strap. Any material can be used as a lanyard such as metals, cotton, thread, paper wire or anything.

In the French military, lanyards were used to connect small equipment that is important for their activities. They used lanyards to connect it because of the easiness to use it. They connected their pistols, swords, etc. Because those weapons were important in their work. At any time they need to use it. Therefore it is not possible to put it in a cover or fold it in a box.

By using lanyards it was easy to take out and to use. And another important use of lanyards was to carry their whistle or to connect the whistle to their uniform semi-permanently. It helped secure against fall and it can be dropped without being lost. It is easy to protect something by using a lanyard.

For rope access techniques, special devices are used: rope access equipment. rope access equipment consists of many devices such as semi-static ropes, safety harness kit for protection, carabiners to hook and connect, lanyards to function properly, Pulley to lift...etc. Each device has its own functions.

Rope access equipment kits are available. It will be included all the necessary devices. The rope access method is safe and efficient. Independently certified rope access technicians can join on IRATA family. In the work-at-height sector, IRATA is the sole global trade association.

Harness

The harness is a part of rope access equipment. It is an important device for technicians who are working at heights or in risky and adventures works. Many climbers rig a chest harness from webbing, however, these are troublesome to regulate as layers modification and also the ring is probably going to smack them within the face throughout a fall.

The chest harness is superior to any rigged chest harness. The buckles are located under the arms where they are out of the way of pack shoulder straps. Use a lockup ring to clip the chest harness to the rope that's tied into the seat harness.

Full body climbing harness for children. 

The full-body climbing harness is designed for children weighing less than 30 kg, this harness is especially easy to put on and adjust. It doesn't need a connection to be mounted, and the adjustment system is difficult for a child to access. The perforated foam structure and also the front fixing purpose favor comfort whereas ascent. The rear attachment purpose permits the kid to be connected for different specific activities.

Safety has come a long way since the advent of early fall protection. In its earliest form, people used hemp ropes and knots to secure themselves (and other objects) against the forces of gravity.

Early fall protection became more and more common on top of ship decks throughout stormy seas. It usually consisted of ropes and a body belt restraint. Other forms of fall protection could be found in ships, line-utility applications, and construction.

Between 1880 and 1930, nearly 24 million immigrants arrived in the United States and began working in modern cities like New York and Chicago. The cost of land prompted architects and engineers to build up, bringing a new kind of building to life: the skyscraper. During this time, steel was the basis for the sky scraper’s architectural design, and as such, it required hundreds of men to work at height without any fall arrester.

Fall arrester equipment was limited, especially in the construction industry. Workers had to walk across one-foot-wide steel beams hundreds of feet in the air. This led to countless injuries and deaths, approximately accounting for 40 percent of the workforce—or two out of every five workers. With such a staggering loss of life, engineers began looking for better solutions to keep workers safer at height.

At the end of the 20th century, technological advances helped to shape the concept of horizontal overhead fall protection. Overtime, fall protection solutions began to evolve, and hemp rope was eventually replaced with wire rope. Body belts were typically worn loosely around the waist, making them unreliable and dangerous

Manufacturers began developing new and innovative fall arrester products to improve worker safety. Body belts remained in use for several decades, until workers began to understand the dangers associated with them. Workers had to fall a certain way to circumvent potential hazards. The body belt would arrest a fall if the worker fell ‘correctly’. However, if he fell ‘incorrectly’, the belt could be pulled up under his arms, or he could slip from the belt entirely. In the event of a fall, dangerous forces were directed to the worker’s spine and midsection when wearing a body belt.
