FALL PROTECTION FOR TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

FALL PROTECTION FOR TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

The transportation industry often requires workers to climb atop tanker trucks, flatbeds, and even open or closed trailers on a regular basis. It’s sometimes unknown that a lot of people die falling from 20 feet or from higher heights. Therefore fall arresters are important for them.

There are many other risks to transportation professionals, but the daily tasks of servicing large vehicles and loading and unloading trucks can present serious and life-threatening fall hazards. The transportation industry is often overlooked in regard to fall protection, and yet many workers suffer severe injuries and even death each year falling from tanker and flatbed trucks, among other types of transportation systems.

Even so, there are only some Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations that apply to fall protection for drivers and other workers climbing atop trucks and trailers to strap and secure loads. For years, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration didn't implement clear regulations in respect to the transportation trade.

Fall arresters are implemented for employees many times. In 2004, several regulations were implemented to protect workers, however, one specific regulation was too broad, as it encompassed a wide range of applications. This particular regulation applied to unprotected sides and edges (in general) and falls under OSHA 1926.501(b)(1).

It states: Each worker on a horizontal or vertical working surface with a non-protected side or corners which is 6 feet (1.8 m) or more above a lower level shall be protected from falling by the use of guardrail or safety systems, or personal fall arrest systems.

This regulation was written and intended to encompass ANY working or walking surface that workers might be exposed to while conducting their job. It was most definitely intended to include flatbed trucks and trailers, particularly because workers must use these surfaces to conduct their daily tasks. But, it’s caused some confusion in the transportation industry in regard to fall protection

Harness Fall Protection

Harness - Fall Protection

The harness attachment points are the obscure hero on a full body harness. Without a way to connect the worker to a fall protection system or harborage point, the full body harness would be useless. Different fall protection operations want different types of connection points. Harness is a part of safety and protection system.

Fall protection outfit will only work duly when it's used rightly. To reduce the abuse of a full body harness, we're going to explain the most common types of harness connection points, where they're located, and how they're meant to serve. Before wearing a full body harness, it is suggested to wear a proper safety dressings.

Although there are numerous different styles of full body harness that are used within the fall protection assiduity, there are some rudiments that are considered harness norms. In utmost cases, harness attachment points will be made out of essence D-rings.

A harness will have connection points grounded on how a company intends to use them. The most common functions of full body harness attachment points are fall arrest, work positioning, trip restraint, descent, evacuation, and graduation climbing.

Depending upon the type of work that needs to be performed at height, it's possible that a full body harness could perform all of those functions, or only one or two of them. The important thing is to know what kind of harness attachment is demanded in order to negotiate those different functions.

A full body harness is a part of rope access system. Rope access system is normally used to reach to the places which is not able to reach easily. For example, If we are unable to reach to the edges and corners of a tall building, we can use rope access technique to access there. Because it is using some equipment along with a rope, not a cradle. Therefore the weight bearing will not effect to the building.

Safety harness and fall protection

Safety Harness and Fall Protection

Safety harnesses are used to secure an employee who is working at heights. Different types of situations require various types of safety harnesses. Especially the workers who need fall protection, and workers who are entering into confined spaces, rock climbers and adventures, and cave explorers also need safety harnesses to protect themselves.

As we know harnesses are for our safety. However these safety harnesses can also kill. It can be deadly equipment whenever a worker is suspended for durations of more than five minutes in an upright posture, with the legs relaxed straight beneath the body. This can happen in different situations in the industry.

A carpenter who working alone is caught in mid-fall by his safety harness. The possibility to die is 15 minutes later from suspension trauma. It is a state the body reaches, once the fall has happened. it is a complicated state.

An electrical technician who was with a safety harness is lowered into a shaft after testing for toxic gases. He is lowered on a cable and is positioned at the right level for his next work. After few minutes he became unconscious. But others don't realize it. After 15 minutes a dead body is hauled out. The reason for this problem is called suspension trauma.

Most of the users of fall protection equipment, rescue people, and other safety and health professionals are still not aware of these kinds of hazards. Well-trained people only allowed to do works at the heights. There are certain certifications required to perform these jobs.

Training in this field is really important. As well as the inspection of all equipment including fall protection safety harness is required in a minimum 6 months gap. to make sure the safety of the employees, it is necessary. All the employees should be aware of all the upcoming hazardous and risks of this kind of works.

Fall Protection in Rope Access

Fall Protection in Rope Access

A comprehensive fall protection program avoids injuries that secure lives and makes better business sense. In most industries, there are areas where workers are subjected to fall hazards. In 2010 there are 635 fatal falls resulted in billions of dollars in workers' compensation costs.
Fall Protection

According to Liberty Mutual, the leading private provider of workers’ compensation insurance in the United States, on-the-job injuries cost employers nearly $1 billion per week in payments to injured employees and their medical providers. We can prevent many of these injuries and fatalities by developing and implementing comprehensive fall protection programs in the workplace.

Fall hazard elimination should be considered first once fall hazards have been identified by a competent person. This is consists of redesigning the working environment and the work processes and procedures and it is known as “engineering out the hazard”. If this is impractical due to extensive modifications and cost, fall protection should be considered next.

What is Rope access and Where we can use it?

Rope access is a method that is used to reach the edges and corners at the height which is not able to reach normally. We can define it as the technical progress on the rope when conventional access methods can't be used.

Rope access techniques required technicians as it indicates. Because this job is at the highest risk. Normal workers can't use it easily. They need to get training on it. And it should be approved by Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA). The rope access technique developed by IRATA is employed during a wide selection of repair, maintenance, inspection, and access work.

IRATA has formed in the UK within the late 1980s, it is an acronym for the industrial Rope Access Trade Association to resolve maintenance challenges within the offshore oil and gas industry. Rope Access Equipment Kit will be used for the activities related to it. This kit will be included all the safety items required to perform this action.

Fall Protection

Fall Protector

When you purchase fall arrestor systems and components, it is crucial that all of the parts are compatible and that they work for your application. There are equipment designations created by the industry to identify product functions and capabilities, which makes it easier to match products and applications for the best results.

fall arrestor suppliers uae

One example is found in ANSI Z359, which designates a fall arrestor system as either Class A or Class B based on their maximum average arresting force (MAAF) and maximum arresting distance. SRLs with MAAF of 1,350 pounds or less and maximum arresting distance of 24 inches or less are considered Class A. SRLs with MAAF of 900 pounds or less and maximum arresting distance of 54 inches or less are considered Class B.
ANSI Z359 also outlines definitions and requirements for other features of a fall arrestor system. There are specifications for leading-edge SRLs (SRL-LE) and SRLs with Integral Rescue Capability (SRL-R). There are guidelines for testing processes and environmental factors. There are many requirements that are intended to make sure all SRLs meet uniform performance requirements. However, manufacturers have some flexibility within those parameters.
where the type of fall protection system is an important factor for choosing an SRL is in the difference between rigid rail systems and rope access systems. Rigid rail systems have very little deflection because they are typically made of some type of steel tubing.

However, rope access systems will deflect significantly in the event of a fall, so a falling worker would come to rest at a lower point with a wire rope system than with a rigid rail system. Because a wire rope system will deflect more in a fall event, you have to consider the arresting distance of your SRLs, especially if your application has multiple levels that are relatively close together.
A Class B SRL’s longer arresting distance, compounded by the higher deflection of the rope access system, might not be able to arrest a fall within the limited space between levels, allowing the worker to strike a lower level.

Fall Protection Devices

Fall Protection Devices

A harness will have connection points based on how a company intends to use them.  The most common functions of full-body harness attachment points are fall arrest, work positioning, travel restraint, descent, evacuation, and ladder climbing.

Depending upon the type of work that needs to be performed at height, it is possible that a full-body harness could perform all of those functions or only one or two of them. The important thing is to know what kind of harness attachment is needed in order to accomplish those different functions.

Harnesses that can be used with a ladder-climbing safety system will have either a single D-ring or a pair of D-Rings at chest level. These harnesses are designed to connect to a ladder fall protection system so that a worker can have a fall arrest while working on a ladder. This particular harness attachment is designed to keep a worker relatively close to the ladder to improve the success of the ladder fall arrest device.
Generally speaking, the work environment for which the full-body harness is needed will dictate the number and location of the harness attachment points. Different harness attachment points will help you identify the ways in which the harness can be used. If you need a harness that can perform in a certain way or assist with a certain function, it’s important to find a harness that has the appropriate connection points for what you are trying to accomplish.

The fall protection device is an important part of rope access equipment. It is mainly designed for the safety purpose of the employees who are work at heights. It consists of different products which are used for indoor and outdoor activities.

In all construction sites, they will give importance to safety. We can see the allowed PPE system in front of it. It is placed for notifying the workers as well as the strangers who are entering into the site. similarly, for the workers to perform activities that require high security, they need to wear a full-body harness and all other fall protection devices.
