The Standards

There are some standards to use a pipe marking tape. If the application is for water treatment facilities across the U.S., there are two standards specifically developed.  These two are:

1. Recommended Standards for WaterWorks (2012 edition)
2. Recommended Standards for Wastewater Facilities (2014 edition)

These two standards for pipe marking tapes developed by a coalition of ten U.S. states and one Canadian province are part of the 10 States Standards —Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ontario.


These standards are normally applicable only to these ten states. But other states are also following it, they are considering it as the baseline of their own standards. The reason is, these standards for pipe marking tapes are proving better communication ability with the public. It is easily catchable notifications and can give awareness to the public quickly. Also, it provides a wealth of reliable information that will help the workers to improve safety and operations.

Protection, safety, and awareness are the main goals of all floor marking tapes. There is a chance for high warehouse traffics in large companies, also complex and confusing warehouse layouts can be there in small companies.  both cases can benefit the use of floor marking tapes there.

For example, floor marking tape will clearly mark areas for pallets. If you can’t tell where to put the pallets, you’re wasting time, taking up valuable space, and compromising safety. With floor marking, you'll be able to organize the pallets based on their content or shipping destination.

Floor Marking Requirements

To use floor marking tape in an area, there should be some standards to consider. OSHA’s general standard of a working place is 29 CFR 1910.22, titled “Walking and Working Surfaces.” The regulation needs these surfaces to be inspected periodically and kept clean, safe, and accessible.

Additionally, to use floor marking tape where mechanical equipment such as forklifts are used, OSHA’s regulations for materials handling (in 1910.176) come into play. These rules require that safe clearances must be maintained, and permanent aisles and passageways must be appropriately marked.

Actually, these rules do not need floor marking tape, painted lines, or other forms of floor marking; the rules are written to focus on the goal, rather than the method used to achieve it. However, floor marking will be an excellent way to move toward each of the goals set to come in the government agency laws. High-quality floor marking tape is efficient, extremely visible, and withstands the abuse of warehouse traffic.

Elements of a Pipe Marker

In general, there are 5 components that build an efficient pipe marking tape. These components are employed by most pipe marking standards and include:

1. Color coding provides a means for workers to quickly identify the general contents of pipes as well as potential hazards.
2. The text identifies the pipe’s exact contents and may also display other hazards like temperature or pressure.
3. Arrows indicate the direction of flow, including when contents might flow in either direction.
4. Label placement recommendations ensure people will see the label and be able to access the information they need with minimum effort.
5. Size tips assist you to select the correct size label and text to confirm pipe marking tapes will be read.

The first four components are specifically self-addressed within the ten State Standards of a pipe marking tape, while guidance for the fifth can be found in another standard.
