All the types of desiccants have the amorphous nature, silica gel is also not different. Always we can see the packets of silica it is mentioned as "Do not eat". As we know it is an inactive chemical, it will not work with any other substances. However, consuming silica gel is not good for our health.
Silica gel can easily enter the respiratory system of Humans because of its amorphous structure. It can make a lot of effects. It can lead to silicosis, bronchitis, or cancer If we are inhaling crystalline silica dust for a long time. The dust might be lodged in the lungs and continuously irritates them, reducing lung capacities.
Researches show inhaling crystalline silica gel dust can reduce the immunity of the employees who are exposed to it for long years. The employees with exposure to crystalline silica shown 10 fold higher than others of lupus and other systemic autoimmune diseases. Crystalline silica particles will not dissolve in the body over clinically relevant periods.
Once the silica gel crystals entered into the lungs, inside macrophages and dendritic cells it can activate the NLRP3 inflammation, and thereby result in the processing of pro-interleukin 1 beta into its mature form. As interleukin-1 Is a highly pro-inflammatory cytokine in the immune system, chronic exposure to silica may thereby account for some of its health hazards.

BASF F-200 activated alumina is rapidly becoming the industry standard for drying compressed gas. Providing long service life with a performance at or below dew point specifications, F-200 is a ‘peace of mind’ product for both large and small dryers. BASF F-200 is acceptable to be used in dehydrating gases in both thermally regenerative (350 to 600°F) and pressure swing (PSA) modes.




Silica Hydrogel Production and Properties: Silica gel is also known as aqua gel. Silica gel got that name because of its high moisture content. Silica gel contains 60 to 65 percentage of its weight. It is a combination of pure silicon dioxide and water. It is available as finely ground white powder or white clear crystals.
These products are generally called as synthetic amorphous silica gels. By reacting sodium silicate solution with an acid, we can produce silica hydrogel. sodium silicate solution is commonly known as water glass. It comprises a distribution of polymeric silicate anions with charge-balancing sodium cations.
Addition of a mineral acid destabilizes the silicate solution forcing the silicate polymers to form colloidal silica particles, known as a silica hydrosol (silica gel). The size of these silica hydrosol is typically 1.5 to 2.0 nm. However it depends on silica concentration, electrolyte level, amount of excess acid and temperature.
Silica gel is a known desiccant. It is widely using for industrial purposes. Colloidal silica particles are highly active. They continue to interact to form a solid close-packed structure with water, and immobilized within the matrix.
Desiccants have ability to absorb water contents. The rigid translucent silica hydrogel is broken into pieces and then washed to remove excess acid and salt by-product. Industries such as cargo and packaging have more advantages with silica gel. They can store their bulk quantity of cargoes along with the desiccants to avoid moisture damages.
Once the required pore structure has been developed, the particles are then milled and classified to give carefully controlled particle size distribution with excellent filtration properties and high purity. Desiccants should be stored in a closed circumstance.

To remove contaminants from the oil, an important step in the refining process involves the use of an adsorbent material. Here as an adsorbent we can use silica gel or silica hydrogel. Adsorption process creates a layer of the adsorbate on the surface of the adsorbent. Adsorption is different from absorption.
The adsorbent agent silica gel is added into the oil as a free-flowing powder. To allow the contaminants to be adsorbed by the surface of the adsorbent particles, this mixture is agitated at the required temperature for a period of time necessary. When the contaminants are surfaced to the surface of the adsorbent particles, the mixture is filtered to remove the spent adsorbent.
Desiccants are a type of absorbents. Generally, the step of adsorbent treatment in edible oil processing is referred to as Bleaching. It involves treatment of the oil with a clay-based adsorbent called bleaching earth or bleaching clay.
As the name suggests, the main function of the bleaching step is to filter color bodies from the oil, for example chlorophyll and carotene. Like desiccants, the bleaching step is responsible for removal of a number of other contaminants including trace levels of phospholipids, metals and oxidation products, together with soaps which are generated upstream in the refining process.
Silica gel desiccants are widely using as an absorbent to avoid moisture damages. For commercial purposes, it is a good substance. Its not harmful to other substances as it is an inactive agent to others.
