Silica Gel Desiccants

Silica Gel Desiccants

Silica Gel can be used for various purposes. Silica gel is a good desiccant. Definitely, you must have seen the tiny silica gel packets along with the boxes of gadgets, shoe boxes and many other objects for daily use.

Silica Gel is not used for consumption but it is used as a good moisture absorber. However, we can safely use silica gel in food containers to keep our things fresh for long days. There should be a warning on the top of the silica gel packets, that have been given to the consumers not to consume silica gel in order to stave off from health issues in the long run.

Although silica gel desiccant is unsafe to eat, still the manufacturer of silica gel recommend customers to not ingest it. Before using silica gel, you should always read a note provided to all the readers, notifying that silica gel is safe and highly effectual to keep food items fresh.

Silica gel can be used to protect special food items such as dried fruits or herbs, spice drawers, Brown sugar that generally tend to clump up along with potatoes, onions and sprouted vegetables are apt to keep the food-related items fresh for many days.

The appropriate method to store food for a lengthy period of time is to use a multi-barrier system. This system safeguards food from natural elements. Silica Gel when doped is traced in a moisture indicator that changes its color from the anhydrous state to a hydrated state.

Silica gel Desiccants are available in different colors such as White, Orange, and Blue. Common indicators are cobalt chloride and methyl. Orange color silica gel also has beads that are used especially in the drying process, foodstuffs, electric appliances, industrial gases and so on. One can use this gel by combining it with other silica gel or you can use the gel independently.

What is Silica Gel?

What is Silica Gel?

In the field of exporting the items which are more vulnerable to a small increase in humidity, it is important to have a component that is capable of absorbing moisture and water from the surroundings. Silica Gel is such a component, made from soluble glass and acts as a desiccant or drier.

Silica Gel Desiccant
As a drying agent, silica gel is using all over the world. Because of its common availability and cheap price, it is one of the best methods to keep things dry. The surface area of the silica gel desiccant is 700-800 square meters per gram with a microscopic pore size of 2.4 nanometers. It plays a main role in controlling humidity because it can absorb water molecules from the surroundings.

Due to the ability to soak up and Un-absorb the moisture, silica gel has an infinite life. Therefore it can be reconditioned and reused. Silica Gel is inactive to most of the other substances and has no volatile components. Therefore, it is 99% safe to use with other things. It will not react with anything.

Preservation in compressed gas systems is attained only through silica gel desiccant. Silica Gel can convert from anhydrous state to a hydrous state. Silica gel contains moisture indicators such as Methyl violet & Cobalt Chloride. Because of the presence of such indicators, Silica Gel Desiccant can see in different colors like orange and blue.

Silica Gel is available in both the bead form, as well as crystal form. Normally, Silica Gel is a colorless material. It is odorless and sometimes interchangeable with silica xerogel that forms a granular shape. To attain the Silica Gel bead form, this granular form is purified and processed.

Chemical indicators are impregnated in silica gel to indicate the absorption of moisture visually. So colored forms of Silica Gel beads are available depends on the moisture absorption capacity of it. As a good desiccant, silica gel is the most favorite product all over the world.

Side Effects of Silica Gel Desiccant

Side Effects of Silica Gel Desiccant

Silica gel is a desiccant. Normally we are considering silica gel as an inactive substance. Tiny packets of silica gel are familiar to everyone. When we are purchasing new shoes or laptops, along with the product, inside the boxes we can see small sachets of silica gel. the purpose of this is to absorb excess moisture from the surroundings of the product to keep it fresh.

All the types of desiccants have the amorphous nature, silica gel is also not different. Always we can see the packets of silica it is mentioned as "Do not eat".  As we know it is an inactive chemical, it will not work with any other substances. However, consuming silica gel is not good for our health.

Silica gel can easily enter the respiratory system of Humans because of its amorphous structure. It can make a lot of effects. It can lead to silicosis, bronchitis, or cancer If we are inhaling crystalline silica dust for a long time. The dust might be lodged in the lungs and continuously irritates them, reducing lung capacities.

Researches show inhaling crystalline silica gel dust can reduce the immunity of the employees who are exposed to it for long years. The employees with exposure to crystalline silica shown 10 fold higher than others of lupus and other systemic autoimmune diseases. Crystalline silica particles will not dissolve in the body over clinically relevant periods.

Once the silica gel crystals entered into the lungs, inside macrophages and dendritic cells it can activate the NLRP3 inflammation, and thereby result in the processing of pro-interleukin 1 beta into its mature form. As interleukin-1 Is a highly pro-inflammatory cytokine in the immune system, chronic exposure to silica may thereby account for some of its health hazards.

This effect can create difficulties for people working with sandblasting equipment, products that contain powdered crystalline silica desiccant, and so on. Children, asthmatics of any age, allergy sufferers, and the elderly can be affected in much less time. Amorphous silica, such as fumed silica is not associated with the development of silicosis but may cause irreversible lung damage in some cases.

Activated Alumina Desiccant

Activated Alumina Desiccant

Activated Alumina is a form of aluminum oxide. It works as a desiccant through adsorption. As air passes through the alumina, the water within the air sticks it and becomes trapped and air that passes through an activated alumina filter is dried out. Even if immersed during a liquid, AA won't disintegrate or soften.
activated alumina suppliers
Activated Alumina
We can restore the first adsorption efficiency of activated alumina by heating it to any temperature from 350° to 600°F (177° to 316°C). When the desiccant is heated as described above, the water stored in it's released. This means that filters with AA can be reused over and over again.

Air and Gas Drying: BASF F-200 can dry almost all liquids and gases. To achieve efficient storage, transportation, and processing of fluid, it's often necessary to get rid of water. Activated Alumina Desiccant F200: This is a very porous form of aluminum oxide of high surface area that adsorbs liquids and gases without any change in form.

Activated alumina won't soften or disintegrate when immersed in liquids. Activated alumina could also be regenerated to its original adsorption efficiency by heating to a temperature between 350-600°F (177-316°C). Desiccant: Activated alumina as a desiccant, will work by adsorption. The water within the air will stick with the alumina because the air passes through it.

The water molecules become trapped so that the air is dried out as it passes through the filter. This process of regenerating the alumina is achieved when the activated alumina desiccant is heated, it'll abandoning all of the water stored in it, allowing it to be used over and over. Air and Gas Drying: Nearly all gases and liquids can be dried with F-200. Water removal is usually necessary for efficient processing, storage, and transportation of fluids.

BASF F-200 activated alumina is rapidly becoming the industry standard for drying compressed gas. Providing long service life with a performance at or below dew point specifications, F-200 is a ‘peace of mind’ product for both large and small dryers. BASF F-200 is acceptable to be used in dehydrating gases in both thermally regenerative (350 to 600°F) and pressure swing (PSA) modes.

Silica Gel Uses on Life

Silica Gel Uses on Life

Silica gel is familiar to all as a good moisture absorber. There is a lot of applications for silica gel in our daily life. Day by day the applications are increasing. The main thing or important advantage of silica gel is, it is inactive to most of the other products. It has no side effects or anything.

We can see some examples based on the real experiences of silica gel.
We know that the silica gel desiccants has the ability to absorb moisture from the surroundings. In this way, it can maintain food products as fresh without water content and can avoid rust by removing water from it.

This one's an old favorite. If your phone becomes the unfortunate victim of a spill or swim, you'll still rescue it—you just got to act fast. Remove the battery and any memory cards from the phone, then toss it during a bowl crammed with silica desiccant packets (dry rice will work, too, during a pinch). Before powering it on again, leave it there a minimum of overnight.

Another example of silica gel use is to extend the life of razor blades
"It is understood that oxidation on razor blades causes premature dulling. I keep a Tupperware half-filled with silica desiccant in my medicine chest. After each shave, I blot any residual water off the blade and store the razor within the Tupperware with the desiccant." This is a true experience story from Russell from Madison, Wl

Fight camera condensation
If you are taking your camera out into the cold, it can face serious condensation once you bring it back to a warm room. Remove the battery and memory card, and place the camera during a bowl of desiccant to suck up the moisture.

Silica gel is inactive and non-toxic. It can dispose of with all other normal garbages. Also, we can use it again by dehydrating it with a microwave oven once it is reached to its maximum absorption level.

See what Mr. Aaron from Indianapolis said: "I am a line mechanic for Delta Airlines. We do all our work here outside since we don't have a hangar. So when an aircraft arrives with maintenance issues I have to wheel my tools outside, leaving them vulnerable to weather, and sometimes my toolbox gets filled with snow or rain. I have found that if I put two desiccant packs per drawer in my toolbox, it is just enough to dry them out and keep my tools from oxidation".

This experience proves that to keep your tools free of oxidation throw silica gel desiccant packets in it. Actually, the desiccants are good for a lot more than this. It is a natural substance or method to keep things dry and fresh by avoiding moisture. But we need to make sure the surroundings are closed not open air.

Now we can see some other true story about silica gel. "I fly ultralight aircraft and use silica gel in my engines (snowmobile engines converted for aircraft use). I put the gel in old plastic 35-mm film canisters.

I drill holes in the silica gel canisters smaller than the beads so they don't come out, and I put one inside each carburetor intake to help keep moisture out of the engine while it is in storage during the winter. This helps keep the bearings from pitting and the internal parts of the engine from rusting. Snowmobilers could benefit from this during the summer while their sleds are not being used".

This is not the end. These is a lot of uses for silica gel and other moisture absorbers on our daily life

Silica Gel Desiccants

Silica Gel Desiccants

While opening a vitamin tablet bottle, a new shoe-box, or an electronic device package, you will often encounter a little packet of silica gel inside it. Printed warnings usually tell you to throw it away (and don’t even think about eating it), but silica gel can actually be put to good reuse in the kitchen.

Silica Gel is a naturally occurring mineral and it is a form of silicon dioxide. As a desiccant, it helps prevent degradation or spoilage of products that are sensitive to moisture. That’s why you’ll find the sachets in everything from a new handbag to a package of beef jerky.

The kitchen uses for silica gel are practically endless. We can place the packets stashed in our spice jars, in containers of dried fruits and herbs, and with stored kitchen tools like cast iron pans, cookie cutters, and Mason jar rings to avoid the moisture.

By the way, if you ate silica gel what would happen? The answer is "Nothing". But still, we are exercising to throw it. It is a good relief to know that it’s completely safe to have around the kitchen.

When most of the people get a packet of silica gel in a new shoe-box or vitamin bottles, their instinct is to throw it. But we have to understand that desiccants are good for a lot more than keeping jerky dry. It has countless uses in our daily life. The important feature is it is not active with chemicals or any other products. So maintenance is easy while we are using silica desiccants.

One good example for Desiccant use in underwater camera casings

It is great fun using underwater camera casings, but even if stray moisture and condensation don't ruin your camera, they can fog or streak across your lens. Remove this by stashing a packet or two of silica gel desiccant in the underwater casing, along with the camera.

Silica Gel Desiccant

Silica Gel desiccant

Silica gel is a solid and organic stirring material that is synthetically made from sodium silicate and it is an amorphous form of silicon dioxide, which is produced in the form od beaded (having presence of small spherical) and granular (hard irregular appearance of crystals) with having a high surface area that makes silica gel a highest capacity of moisture adsorption capacity than other adsorbents.
silica gel suppliers dubai
Silica Gel Packets
The water molecules adhere to the surface area of silica gels because it exhibits a lower vapor pressure than the surrounding air. Once the saturation level is reached of equivalent pressure, no more adsorption process ensues. Thus the greater amount of humidity condition (above 50% relative humidity) and water portion that is adsorbed before steadiness is grasped.

Silica gel is using for different applications. Its usage is increasing day by day. In the future, as per the research analysis, within 5 years the market of silica gel and silica products will have a huge hype. In the food industries, packaging industries, glass industries, machinery, electronic industries...the area of its application is really high.

Desiccant is another name of silica gel. as said before, the application area of silica gel is wide. Therefore, for each industrial application desiccant is available in different names sometimes with little differences.

For example, if you are running a glass industry you can use normal white desiccant for your applications. If it is the food industry or drug industry, definitely you will be worried about the hygiene of food and pharma products. But the manufactures made it clear. That is considering Clariant turkey company, they are manufacturing all the types of absorbing products for all the applications.

Their, Oxy-guard desiccant is mainly focussing on food and pharma industries. Container Dri desiccant is mainly focussing on packaging and shipping industries. Normal silica gel can be used for all applications.

silica gel desiccant

Silica Gel Desiccant

Desiccants are commonly used to keep products dry and stable. Dry desiccants can absorb moisture from the air either by physical adsorption or by chemical reaction, and thus reduce the humidity in the headspace of sealed containers.

Moisture sorption by silica gel is an example of physical adsorption, and sorption by calcium oxide is an example of a chemical reaction. Different types of desiccants and their moisture sorption capacities can be found in the literature.16 The most commonly used desiccants for solid pharmaceutical products are silica gel, clay, and molecular sieves.

Silica gel is an amorphous form of silica (SiO2 xH2O) and is highly porous. Silica gel particles are composed of an interconnecting network of microscopic pores (capillaries), and therefore have a very large surface area. The mechanisms of moisture adsorption by silica gel include surface adsorption and capillary condensation in the porous network.

silica gel desiccant

Silica gel works well at ambient temperature but may have decreased adsorption rate and equilibrium moisture content at higher temperatures. The moisture in silica gel can be removed by drying at a temperature greater than 110°C. The current USP Chapter <671> recommends pre-drying silica gel desiccant at approximately 150°C to ensure the complete removal of adsorbed water.

Clay is a low cost and efficient desiccant at low temperature. The primary chemical composition of clay includes silica and aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, and ferric oxide. Moisture adsorption capacity may be different for different grades of clay desiccant.

Therefore, their moisture adsorption isotherms must be verified during the desiccant selection process. Clay works well at ambient temperature, but at temperatures >50°C, it will likely lose moisture rather than absorb moisture. Similar to silica gel, bentonite clay can be dried at a temperature greater than 110°C.

Silica Hydrogel Production and Properties: Silica gel is also known as aqua gel. Silica gel got that name because of its high moisture content. Silica gel contains 60 to 65 percentage of its weight. It is a combination of pure silicon dioxide and water. It is available as finely ground white powder or white clear crystals.

These products are generally called as synthetic amorphous silica gels. By reacting sodium silicate solution with an acid, we can produce silica hydrogel. sodium silicate solution is commonly known as water glass. It comprises a distribution of polymeric silicate anions with charge-balancing sodium cations.

silica gel desiccant

Addition of a mineral acid destabilizes the silicate solution forcing the silicate polymers to form colloidal silica particles, known as a silica hydrosol (silica gel). The size of these silica hydrosol is typically 1.5 to 2.0 nm. However it depends on silica concentration, electrolyte level, amount of excess acid and temperature.

Silica gel is a known desiccant. It is widely using for industrial purposes. Colloidal silica particles are highly active. They continue to interact to form a solid close-packed structure with water, and  immobilized within the matrix.

Desiccants have ability to absorb water contents. The rigid translucent silica hydrogel is broken into pieces and then washed to remove excess acid and salt by-product. Industries such as cargo and packaging have more advantages with silica gel. They can store their bulk quantity of cargoes along with the desiccants to avoid moisture damages.

Once the required pore structure has been developed, the particles are then milled and classified to give carefully controlled particle size distribution with excellent filtration properties and high purity. Desiccants should be stored in a closed circumstance.

uses of silica gel

Uses of Silica Gel

Here we can discuss about the uses of silica gel in Edible Oil Refining. Silica gel is an adsorbent. Adsorbent means a substance that can adsorb another substance. Adsorption is a phenomena that the adhesion of atoms, ions or molecules from liquid, solid, or gas to a surface.

To remove contaminants from the oil, an important step in the refining process involves the use of an adsorbent material. Here as an adsorbent we can use silica gel or silica hydrogel. Adsorption process creates a layer of the adsorbate on the surface of the adsorbent. Adsorption is different from absorption.

The adsorbent agent silica gel is added into the oil as a free-flowing powder. To allow the contaminants to be adsorbed by the surface of the adsorbent particles, this mixture is agitated at the required temperature for a period of time necessary. When the contaminants are surfaced to the surface of the adsorbent particles, the mixture is filtered to remove the spent adsorbent.

silica gel desiccant uae

Desiccants are a type of absorbents. Generally, the step of adsorbent treatment in edible oil processing is referred to as Bleaching. It involves treatment of the oil with a clay-based adsorbent called bleaching earth or bleaching clay.

As the name suggests, the main function of the bleaching step is to filter color bodies from the oil, for example chlorophyll and carotene. Like desiccants, the bleaching step is responsible for removal of a number of other contaminants including trace levels of phospholipids, metals and oxidation products, together with soaps which are generated upstream in the refining process.

Silica gel desiccants are widely using as an absorbent to avoid moisture damages. For commercial purposes, it is a good substance. Its not harmful to other substances as it is an inactive agent to others.

Silica gel for flower drying

Silica Gel for flower drying

Silica gel is a desiccant. It has a lot of uses in our daily life. It can be used for preparing homemade dried flowers. Dry flowers have a good scope in the decoration and event management industries. The best is always fresh flowers. However, if we need to extend our decorations for a long time, dry flowers are the best option.
desiccant suppliers uae
Some kind of desiccants can be used to dry flowers. Silica gel is one of them. Let's see how we can dry flowers in our home by using silica gel. We can use flowers from our garden or fresh flowers from our nearest grocery. Put the silica gel into an airtight container avoid exposing to the atmosphere.

We know that silica gel desiccant is non-toxic and inactive. However, we recommend wearing a mask, and using gloves are better when handling this kind of stuff. When you pour the silica gel into the container, it can produce a very fine dust. That is not good to inhale.

To start the process of drying flowers, add a layer of silica gel crystals about 1.5 inches thick into your container. Then put the flowers in the container and pour more crystals in and around the petals until fully covered but not submerged completely. Seal the lid closed when done, and set the container in a dry place.
silica gel suppliers
Usually, it will take only 2 to 4 days to dry it completely. Silica gel is a good moisture absorber. But make sure it is not exposed to the atmosphere. Because if it is exposed to the atmosphere, there is a big chance to get hydrated so soon.

In the atmosphere the presence of water is very high, silica gel can absorb it easily and become hydrated easily. But another thing is we can regenerate it by using a simple oven. By reheating the silica gel by using an oven for 20 minutes at high temperatures it can regain the capacity to absorb moisture quickly.

Silica Gel Desiccant

Everybody has the same doubt about the silica gel. As everyone knows silica gel is a desiccant it can absorb moisture from the surroundings and it is an inactive substance. That means it will not react with any other chemicals or substances. Then why there is writing on the packets such as "Do not eat".
desiccant suppliers uae

Like some other desiccants or substances, silica gel could possibly cause issues if eaten in huge amounts, particularly by little youngsters or grown-ups with intramuscular issues that The greater threat, however, is that numerous youngsters don't simply eat the dabs; they eat the entire parcel.

If someone ate silica gel by accident, nothing to worry but they should drink plenty. Because they might feel disturbances and itchiness in their mouth and throat. But you may well be uncomfortable for a time. Why put yourself through that pain? A good rule for life is: if you are not sure it's safe to eat, assume it's not.

While silica gel is the most well-known desiccant endorsed for use in nourishment items, other, less amiable substances are once in a while utilized in other Additionally, one kind of silica gel comes coated with cobalt chloride, which is viewed as dangerous.

Better to keep the silica gel packets away from children. National Library of Medicine (some portion of the National Institutes of Health) regards gulping a huge amount on the double as not very risky, however, concedes that it might cause, Therefore, if you ingest a "don't eat" bundle, as a sanity check, specialists prescribe calling a poison control focus.

The across the country hotline for any poison crisis in the United States is 1-800-222-1222. Even silica gel is an inactive substance it can make uncomforted to people. Therefore as an indication for public awareness, mention "Do not eat" on each and every tiny packets of silica gel.

Do you know what is the difference between sodium silicate, silica gel, and silicone compounds used in implants? Sodium silicate is a polymeric compound of silicon and oxygen. But it has some of the SiO- groups paired with the Na+ counterion. For the chemical processes, knowing about the components is important.
silica gel suppliers

It absorbs water, changing the crystalline packing of the polymer. It is an excellent desiccant because it can absorb up to 9 molecules of water for every molecule of sodium silicate. In contrast, cobalt chloride can absorb 6 molecules of water per, and calcium sulfate (Drierite) can absorb about 1.5 molecules of water per.

Silica gel is made by acidifying sodium silicate and is essentially silicon dioxide. It is capable of absorbing 4 molecules of water to form silicic acid. It can be heated to regenerate its ability to absorb water. by using a normal oven also, we can reheat a small quantity of silica gel.

But for industrial purposes, regenerating silica gel by using an oven is not possible. Dumbing of silica gel is easy while comparing to other chemicals. However, as per the responsibility towards the public, it is not good to dispose of along with the common waste. That is why industries are finding a way to dump it always.
desiccant suppliers
As we know silica gel is a good desiccant. Silicone or silicone gel is methylated silicon dioxide polymer, dimethylsiloxane, which has a number of polymerized lengths for different applications. The LD50 for dimethylsiloxane polymers is >~ 20g/kg, so over ten times (or more) less poisonous than sodium silicate, and not alkaline, so no risk of burns.

Silicones are available in different forms, though, with varying levels of irritation or hazard. All the desiccants have the ability to absorb moisture from the surroundings. Therefore it has a lot of industrial uses as well as personal uses in our daily life.

Silica Gel Dubai

Silica Gel Dubai

silica gel is a desiccant. It is manufacturing from some chemicals such as sodium silicate. Like sodium hydroxide, Sodium silicate is a strong base. Silica gel normally appears in the shape of spheres. these small granules have a lot of advantages in our daily life.
desiccant suppliers

As a desiccant, it can be used for absorbing excess moisture from any products or from any closed surroundings. sodium silicate is a chemical substance, the recommendation is to not induce vomiting, because of its corrosive nature. While you see a tiny packet of silica gel, always you can see the writings "do not eat"on it.

By accident, if you consumed silica gel, nothing serious but irritations might be there. If enough sodium silicate begins absorbing water from the lining of your mouth and esophagus, you will experience a soapy sensation and begin to feel burning. Because of the alkaline nature of the sodium silicate, it will start to eat away at your skin. It is even more hazardous if the dust gets in your eyes.

Silica gel is prepared from sodium silicate by the method of acidifying sodium it, and would not be expected to be alkaline- it is silicon dioxide (same as sand). Even if it were I would expect any remaining alkaline nature is potentially neutralized as soon as it hits your stomach.

silica gel suppliers
If it is completely neutralized, there would not be the soapy sensation and there's just a risk of irritating as it goes down if it absorbs water from your mucosal lining and scratches them up. If the desiccant is dissolved in a glass of water, one could measure the pH to determine the risk of burns and would render this risk minimal to non-existent in my book.

That said, a couple of grams in a silica gel packet would not constitute a hazard severe enough that I personally would rush off to the hospital if I accidentally swallowed one. It mentioned DO NOT EAT visibly on it, and you should NOT EAT. I repeat, just because something has a negligible risk of poisoning you does not mean you can "try" eating it.

Silica gel dubai

Silica Gel Dubai

Most silica gel packets contain one or two grams only. Silica gel desiccants are considered "hazardous" because of its potentially irritating nature, not because of its toxicity. Sodium silicate is listed to have an LD50 of about 1.6g/kg. Silicon dioxide is listed to have an LD50 of >~5g/kg, more than 3x times less poisonous than sodium silicate.
silica gel suppliers

If the silica gel in the packet is blue (turns pink), it is doped with cobalt chloride, which is typically used in desiccants such as Drierite at about a 3% level. There are claimed non-toxic (orange) alternatives, but the indicator within the orange silica gel is, if I'm reading things right, either Methyl Violet (turns purple) or ferric ammonium sulfate (turns clear/ lt purple/blue-green).

Cobalt chloride LD50 = 766 mg/kg. So at 3% of the silica, it's no more toxic than the silica gel itself, proportionately, as long because it isn't more than about 10% approximately of the silica. Cobalt compounds are supposed to not be bioavailable, precipitating in physiological
desiccant suppliers

concentrations of phosphate and binding strongly to albumin. However, oral administration of 80mg/kg of cobalt chloride was shown to induce chromosomal changes in mice http://oem.bmj.com/content/58/10/619.abstract, so if the silica gel was blue or pink, I'd probably be very worried if I ate some, even though I wouldn't expect to feel anything.

Methyl Violet LD50 = 413mg/kg. More toxic than CoCl2! Again, in proportion, less toxicity risk than the silica gel itself, as long because it isn't more than 5% of the silica. Ferric Ammonium Sulfate is pretty much nontoxic, so I would expect this is the form used in the packets included with food.

As a desiccant, it can be used to absorb moisture from the surroundings. Commercially, it is using worldwide as a moisture absorber. It can contain a wide range of "ingredients". Silica gel is manufactured from some chemical combinations such as sodium silicate, acidified to silicon dioxide/silicic acid.

Silica Gel Desiccant

Silica Gel desiccant

Silica gel is a desiccant. As we know, all these desiccants are used to absorb excess moisture from the surroundings. It is one of the most commonly used products to avoid moisture damage. We can see small packets of silica gel in our daily life along with some of our daily use items such as laptop bags, some kind of medicines, ...etc.
desiccant suppliers

Based on the types of applications, desiccants are available in different types. For example, to avoid container rain and cargo damages during transportation, container desiccants are available. To avoid moisture from dried food products to keep the items fresh, food protection desiccants are available. Similarly, various types of desiccants are available in the market.

We can see the writings "Do not eat" on every packet of desiccants or silica gel. Do you think is there any problem when you have it? We know that desiccants are non-toxic, inactive, and odorless. Then why it is mentioning like that with high importance. Because whatever it is, the consumption of silica gel is not good.

Unless we eat dozens of silica gel packets, nothing important. Silica gel usually comes in those little packets that are marked ‘Do Not Eat’ to remind people as it is not intended to eat. They are normally with products that would not benefit from having excess moisture in them. The silica gel itself absorbs about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and brings down the humidity of the surrounding container as well.
silica gel suppliers

So, how dangerous is it really? Silica gel is nearly harmless, as it is an inert element, meaning we could find it in food products such as dried fruits and nuts, coffee beans, or along with some kind of medicines and some medical products such as pregnancy test kit, ...etc.  If you tried to eat one packet of silica gel, here’s what would happen.

As soon as you empty the packet into your mouth, all the moisture would be sucked away from the sides of your mouth and your tongue, giving you a very dry feeling. Assuming you didn’t immediately spit out the silica gel, you’d suffer from a myriad of symptoms, such as dry eyes, throat, membranes, and an upset stomach.

Silica Gel Dubai

Most people know about silica gelthat we are not supposed to eat it. It is the unseen substance that inhabits those tiny white packets placed in new shoe boxes, laptop bags, and Asian snack foods, or with some medicines. It will keep the product safe by absorbing excess moisture from the surroundings.

Invariably, the ominous warning “do not eat” is always there above the silica gel or desiccant packet. Sometimes it is mentioned by the edict, “throw away.” In case that’s not clear enough, a few varieties depict a skull and crossbones. It is generally a substance which is not acting with any other products or chemicals. Let's see what happens if you eat it?
desiccant suppliers uae

Nothing, nothing will happen if we eat any desiccant as a small quantity accidentally. And we know that we will not eat a big quantity by accident. Silica gel is another form of silicon dioxide, it is a naturally occurring mineral, better known in its granular form as sand or in crystals as quartz. Its most important feature is its porousness, which permits it to absorb up to 40 percent of its weight in water.

In the middle of the 20th century, it has been started widely used as a desiccant, placed inside containers to avoid the contents from getting damp. Most commonly, it comes in the shape of beads packed in a permeable packet. It can easily absorb wet contents from the surroundings of products, but make sure it is a closed container.

Silica gels are used in everything from museum display cases to electronic equipment packaging. It can be used directly along with food products also. Because as it is a non-toxic element it will not make any changes to the food products.

We can describe silica gel as an inert, non-toxic substance that’s essentially harmless.  It is Indigestible. Because when it passes through the body and comes out looking much the same as when it went in, we can say that it is indigestible.

Silica Gel - FAS Arabia

Silica gel and desiccants are familiar to everyone. We can see tiny packets of silica gel while we are purchasing new shoes or laptops. Inside the laptop bag or shoebox, the packaging companies are putting small packets of silica gel to absorb excess moisture from the closed surroundings.

One thing we need to make sure while putting silica gel with any products to absorb excess moisture, it must be in a closed container or packaging. Because, until a certain limit only silica gel can absorb moisture. Therefore if it is not in a closed container it will try to absorb water molecules from the atmosphere also. So the limit will reach soon. Then again we need to change it.

Silica gel is additionally combined with alkali metals to make an M-SG reducer. Considering the above properties of silica gel researchers are inclined to use silica gel. In developed countries, a vast expansion of technology has bought sophisticated instruments for purifications of chemical mixtures involving silica gel.

But developing and poor countries not in a position to afford such expensive instrumentation are adapted to the techniques involving usage of silica gel manually. Due to the amorphous nature of silica, it easily enters into the respiratory system of Humans and causes a lot of effects. Inhaling silica dust can cause silicosis, bronchitis, or cancer, because the finely divided dust becomes lodged within the lungs and continuously irritates them, reducing lung capacities.

Studies of workers with exposure to crystalline silica desiccants have shown 10-fold higher than expected rates of lupus and other systemic autoimmune diseases compared to expected rates in the general population. So this shows that even this inactive chemical agent can make health issues to humans while inhaling for a long time.

Desiccants are normally considering as an inactive substance. However, having it or inhaling it for a long time can make significant issues to human beings. Researches are showing the result as it should be considered properly while handling every day.

There is a lot of products on the market that can be damaged due to moisture presence. It will make a big loss to the production companies as well as to the transportation companies. Therefore desiccants become the most popular product in between them. In all the desiccants, silica gel desiccant is the most common one.

Silica gel is easily available on the market worldwide. It is not reactive with any other chemicals, oils, acids, or any type of substance. It is considering as an inactive agent with other things. Therefore we can handle it easily as well as we can dispose of it with normal disposals.

Desiccants are one of the best and cost-effective for companies to protect their products from excess water content or damages.  We can see small silica gel packets along with some products which need dry packaging such as shoes, laptops, some medicines...etc.

To avoid the spoilage of many products we can keep silica gel packets along with it. It will not harm us because of its inactive character. The products such as electronics, vitamins, medical products such as pregnancy tester devices, leather goods, dried meat products, dried nuts and fruits, bread products, and more.

Once you got silica gel packets along with any products, do not throw it. Because it has many other benefits apart from industrial uses. In our daily life we can use these tiny packets for several applications such as to remove water content from our mobile screen, to avoid spoilage of coffee powder, to protect pregnancy test kit from moisture...etc.
