What is Silica Gel?
In the field of exporting the items which are more vulnerable to a small increase in humidity, it is important to have a component that is capable of absorbing moisture and water from the surroundings. Silica Gel is such a component, made from soluble glass and acts as a desiccant or drier.
As a drying agent, silica gel is using all over the world. Because of its common availability and cheap price, it is one of the best methods to keep things dry. The surface area of the silica gel desiccant is 700-800 square meters per gram with a microscopic pore size of 2.4 nanometers. It plays a main role in controlling humidity because it can absorb water molecules from the surroundings.
Due to the ability to soak up and Un-absorb the moisture, silica gel has an infinite life. Therefore it can be reconditioned and reused. Silica Gel is inactive to most of the other substances and has no volatile components. Therefore, it is 99% safe to use with other things. It will not react with anything.
Preservation in compressed gas systems is attained only through silica gel desiccant. Silica Gel can convert from anhydrous state to a hydrous state. Silica gel contains moisture indicators such as Methyl violet & Cobalt Chloride. Because of the presence of such indicators, Silica Gel Desiccant can see in different colors like orange and blue.
Silica Gel is available in both the bead form, as well as crystal form. Normally, Silica Gel is a colorless material. It is odorless and sometimes interchangeable with silica xerogel that forms a granular shape. To attain the Silica Gel bead form, this granular form is purified and processed.
Chemical indicators are impregnated in silica gel to indicate the absorption of moisture visually. So colored forms of Silica Gel beads are available depends on the moisture absorption capacity of it. As a good desiccant, silica gel is the most favorite product all over the world.
