Pulley is a mechanical device and a part of rope access equipment. However, the pulley has a lot of roles in our daily life. For example in an elevator, multiple pulleys are using to work it properly. Similarly in a cargo lift system, to lift heavy items into higher floors mechanical devices working with pulleys are using.

Pulleys are a part of many types of exercise equipment. In a construction site, we can see lifting vehicles to lift and place heavy materials, they are using no. of pulleys in order to function. A simple example of a pulley is curtains at a theatre.

The curtain mechanism is similar to blinds on windows. To move the blinds up and down, pulley systems are used. When we pull the cord on the blinds, the pulley system connected to it is acting and it causes the blinds to open or close. For the flagpoles also we are using pulleys to hoist the flag up or to bring it down.

Another example of a pulley is it can be used to place birdfeeders high in trees or on poles. By using this pulley system it is easy to pull them down when they need to be refilled or removed. We can see a lot of examples of pulleys around us. They have an important role in our daily life.

The basic model of a pulley is a small grooved wheel used with a rescue rope. In ancient times it was used to take water from dwells. A rope and a bucket connected to a pulley can lift the water from the bottom of the dwells.

Pulleys can be mainly categorized into three. fixed, movable, and compound pulleys. As the name indicates a fixed pulley's wheel and axle stay in one place. The flag pole is an example of a fixed pulley. If we pull down on the rope, it is possible to change the direction of the force. This is an advantage of a pulley mechanism.

Everybody is familiar with the rope. It is a common object in our daily life. Ropes have been used for a myriad of purposes for many thousands of years. From the construction of the pyramids to sailing boats, ropes have helped us build extraordinary structures and go about basic maintenance tasks for as long as we can remember.

The rope is the main part of the rope access system. Humans have been using ropes for ascending and descending for a very long time but as buildings grew taller and taller, the necessity for a safe system of rope access became increasingly important. Then the role of the rope also increased automatically.

Here we share a brief history of rope access. Back in the early 1900s, health and safety were a non-existent concept and construction workers went about their work devoid of ropes or harnesses. It was not a profession for the faint-hearted! Thankfully, we have come a long way since the days of fearless (or crazy) construction workers relying on their own balance to avoid plummeting to their death.

Ropes are available in different sizes. the length is not a matter, we can cut and reduce it. But the diameter is very important while we are choosing the rope for any work. If any devices are using along with the rope, we should consider all those device's hook/hole/carabiner diameters to choose the perfect rope. 

To perform rope access work, qualified technicians are a must. For normal people, it is a risky job. If the height is a problem, people can't choose this as their career. There are a number of rope access training centers to get qualified in this field.

As buildings grew higher and the offshore oil and gas industry expanded, these hostile environments became ever more problematic for workers to access. Scaffolding was often impractical and exceedingly expensive. Therefore, a radical new solution was needed – enter rope access!

The rope access system is started in the early 1980s, The technique is originally developed by Cavers. And it is adopted as a rope access system as we know it today. Cavers rope system is using only one rope. But in rope access system we added one more additional rope for working at height.

In the rope access system, this secondary rope is added as safety equipment. One rope is used to hang and hold the person who is using the rope access method, while the other rope is used to protect the person. If something happened unexpectedly, this second rope can secure the person.

Unexpected falls and injuries were common while working at the height. It makes more difficulties to get persons for this job. Even for the employer also, it was difficult. But the rope access system made it is an easy and safe job. Employees were get attracted to this system because the risk of the job becomes less.

Specially designed rope access equipment is used for rope access technique to perform each job very well without any damages and losses. For example, ropes are available as static rope, semi-static rope, and dynamic rope. Each job characteristics are different. Before choosing it, we have to consider our application.

If it is a static rope, there will be no changes in the length or width of the rope after each work. And, by hanging weights, it will not expand, therefore the chances to break the rope are high. If it is a dynamic rope, it is highly elastic. It can expand its length more by hanging the weight.

Therefore we are using semi-static rope for rope access system normally. Because it has a medium level expansion capability. While hanging the weight, it will expand and after removing the weight it will contrast. Therefore semi-static ropes are the most suitable rope for rope access systems.

What is a Rope?

A rope is having good tensile strength, therefore it can be used for lifting and dragging. A rope is using for countless applications. It is a common object used all over the world. It has different versions. Even the tiny threads are also another form of ropes. I think our daily life is connected to ropes at any single instance.

Rope can be constructed from different materials such as straw, cotton, linen... etc. It can be made from any long and stringy materials, but generally, it is manufacturing from natural or synthetic fibers. Natural fiber ropes are weaker than the synthetic fiber ropes. Because synthetic fiber is having more tensile strength to make it stronger. They are resistant to rotting than natural fiber ropes.

The rope is a part of the rope access system. This technique completely depends on the ropes. Because of the rope access system, the demand for the rope is increased. However, they are using specific ropes for rope access methods.

Rope access technique is a group of activities that are implemented to reach the areas, that are not easy to access. for example, to clean the windows of a big building on the top floors, it is not easy to reach there. So this technique, with rope access technicians, made these jobs easy.

Two rope are using in rope access system. One is used for holding the person and the other one is used to secure the person. If due to any unfortunate happens and the rope is broken, the rope access technician will not fall down, The other rope can protect him. Therefore this method is considering a safe technique.

A semi-static rope is an important part of the rope access equipment kit. There are different devices in a rope access kit. One of the main elements is rope, and the ropes are available in different characters.

For rope access purposes, the rope will be a semi-static rope. Because dynamic rope and static ropes are not suitable for this. Dynamic ropes are highly stretchable. therefore it will not use for mountain climbing activities. Because when we placing a load there is a chance for highly stretching.

Static ropes also not suitable because they should not have the expansion or contraction property. When a load or fall on the static rope will lead to damage and injury. So the better choice is a semi-static rope. It has less stretch than dynamic rope but it is stretchable than static rope. It is suitable for mountain activities. when you are a long way down, it will have a little bit of "bounce".

Harness

The safety harness is available in different types like full-body harness, sit-harness, chest harness...etc. The harness is an equipment used for rock climbing, abseiling, building maintenance or cleaning, or other activities that require ropes for safety like rope access, working at heights...etc.

The harness is used as a piece of safety equipment. When the technician or worker is working on the heights or in any extraordinary activities, safety harness used to secure them to a rope.

In its simplest type, a harness is made of a length of rope or a nylon webbing tied round the waist. However, this is extremely uncomfortable unless the wearer is very light. It also can ride up to the abdomen or maybe the diaphragm underneath load and cause serious injury. Looping the rope between the legs can stop this, although care ought to be taken to avoid sensitive areas. More refined safety harnesses exist in several patterns, designed to grant bigger comfort and security, and a lot of choices for carrying equipment.

Fall arrester equipment was limited, especially in the construction industry. Workers had to walk across one-foot-wide steel beams hundreds of feet in the air. This led to countless injuries and deaths, approximately accounting for 40 percent of the workforce—or two out of every five workers. With such a staggering loss of life, engineers began looking for better solutions to keep workers safer at height.

At the end of the 20th century, technological advances helped to shape the concept of horizontal overhead fall protection. Overtime, fall protection solutions began to evolve, and hemp rope was eventually replaced with wire rope. Body belts were typically worn loosely around the waist, making them unreliable and dangerous

Manufacturers began developing new and innovative fall arrester products to improve worker safety. Body belts remained in use for several decades, until workers began to understand the dangers associated with them. Workers had to fall a certain way to circumvent potential hazards. The body belt would arrest a fall if the worker fell ‘correctly’. However, if he fell ‘incorrectly’, the belt could be pulled up under his arms, or he could slip from the belt entirely. In the event of a fall, dangerous forces were directed to the worker’s spine and midsection when wearing a body belt.
