Cable Theft
Cable theft is happening around the world. It is considering a global issue. However, In South Africa, it is comparatively high and it became a National crisis. The loss is calculated between 5-7 billion Rand (423-593 million USD) per year. As this is a huge amount, it would effect on country's economy and reliability of electrical supply. Stainless steel ties were used at that time only for tying the cables.Cable theft can interrupt the power supply and it will be last for days and weeks. Out of all these cable thefts, more than 90% are for copper wires. The replacement cost of copper metal is significantly high and it will affect the industry and economy of ordinary South Africans. Band-IT initiated to avoid cable theft by introducing new products.
The government tried its level best to avoid cable theft. But they couldn't find a better solution for this. The economy has fallen down due to the significant losses. They tried to implement Ultra Lok stainless steel ties as frequently as every 150 mm of cable to deter theft. In this way, they increased the security of traditional cable installation.
In August 2015, at a client site, the effectiveness of the Ultra Lok stainless steel ties was proved. The client actually operates in the industry of petrochemical. On their site, earlier it was conveyer belts and it was located in secluded areas. It was difficult to monitor. Therefore it was a major challenge to monitor cable theft also.
After many kinds of research, they reached to Band-IT ties. They have checked various cable ties of Band-IT and finalized with Ultra Lok clamp and installation tool. It was the best suited to the client's projects.
It was a task for Band-IT to reduce cable theft. They provided application tools with Ultra Lok clamps. However, that time another issue has arrived. It was a lack of knowledge to operate the tools by the client site workers. Therefore, Band-IT provided training to the operators that installed the clamps.
