Activated Alumina
Activated alumina is manufactured from aluminum hydroxide. It is making by dehydroxylating aluminum hydroxide. In this way it is making a highly porous material. As it is a porous material it has a big surface area over 200 m²/g. This compound can be used as a good desiccant. It is used as a filter of fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water.
Many industries are using this activated alumina bed as a filter to purify drinking water. It can be used either in the beginning point or in the end point of water purification process. It is a safe method to purify water as it will not emit any kind of harm materials to the water.
Up to 99% of the contaminants can be removed by Activated alumina. It will remove the contaminants depending on pH and concentrations of competing ions. Some other ions such as arsenate, fluoride, sulfate, and selenite also can be removed by activated alumina.
Silica gel is a desiccant such as activated alumina. But the applications are entirely different from activated alumina. Silica gels are commonly available in 3 colors such as Blue silica gel, White silica gel and orange silica gel. All these silica gels have different kinds of characteristics.
According to the characteristics of each silica gel, they have different kinds of applications. Blue silica gels and orange silica gels are used in transformer breathers. And white silica gels are mainly used as small sachets to absorb moisture from its surroundings. The capacity to absorb moisture and hold water contents is different for each type of silica gel.
Blue silica gel could be turned into pink color while it reaches to its maximum capacity of absorption. And orange silica gel could be turned into green color when it is reached to its maximum capacity.
