Activated Alumina for Water Treatment

Activated alumina is made by treating aluminum ore (bauxite) and it is acted as a filter media so that it becomes porous and highly adsorptive. It consists mainly of Al2O3. The production process includes calcination at 500°C, which at the same time removes all organic substances. Apart from the main components, some elements may be present. Depending on the source of bauxite, the composition of the activated alumina may vary.

To ensure that no impurities are released to the water during the treatment by using activated alumina, the media used shall be tested according to the standard applicable for leaching tests.

In any case, the release of impurities during the treatment from the activated alumina into the NMW shall not result in concentrations exceeding the limits set in Commission Directive 2003/40/EC [7] or in the absence of limits in that Directive the restrictions set in Council Directive 98/83/EC of 3 November 1998 on the quality of water intended for human consumption [8] or in national applicable legislation.

Silica Gel for Food Preservation

You are familiar with the transparent granules of silica gel because often you can find it in leather items, electronic goods, and food-based items. Silica Gel is almost harmless. Because of the inactive behavior, the silica gel is found in food products.

The gel form consists of millions of tiny pores that work as moisture absorbers. Normally, silica gel looks like porous sand and in dehydrated and dried foods it can be used to avoid moisture away from the containers. Therefore it is very helpful to protect food products from spoilage.
