Silica Gel and Alumina
As we know activated alumina is used in the purification process of water. It can be used in the initial stage as well as in the final stage. We have to make sure to remove all the contaminated particles from activated alumina before using it as a filter medium for the water purification process.
Let's see the initialization and regeneration procedures. Once a filter has been loaded with virgin activated alumina, the medium is back-washed to remove the fine particles generated by the handling of the material and subsequently chemically treated to activate the adsorption sites and to remove the impurities. The modalities of this treatment are similar to those for regeneration.
The regeneration of activated alumina filters is done in three stages: Treatment with sodium hydroxide to remove fluoride ions and replace them with hydroxide ions; Treatment with an acid to remove residual sodium hydroxide and activate the medium; Rinsing with drinking or demineralized water and conditioning with the natural mineral water so that the filter has no impact on the overall mineral content of the treated water.
Silica Gel
Silica gel is the most used desiccant all over the world. It is used for absorbing moisture from the atmosphere or surroundings of an enclosed area. It can be used to protect packaged food items for a long time by removing moisture presence. There is a lot of industrial uses for silica gel.
In industries, some of the machines required moisture absence to work properly. Such companies or organizations will use silica gel breathers to avoid moisture from it. In these breathers, they are using either orange silica gel or blue silica gel as the desiccant.
There's no expiration date for the silica gel.
The gel packets can be dehydrated again once it reached to maximum absorption level. If a silica gel packet left out in the open area will immediately start taking up water vapor from the surroundings because it can absorb moisture from any environment condition.
