Usually, nothing happens if you eat any desiccant as we know. But it can make many discomforts to the person who eats it. Silica gel is using a drying agent. It can remove humidity from a closed area. Silica gel is non-toxic so that it is not poisonous if eaten but here is some side effect if u ate silica gel by chance:

• Dry eyes - Because silica gel can absorb water content from the surroundings.
• An irritated, dry feeling in your throat
• Aggravated, dry mucous membranes and nasal cavity
• An upset stomach or stomach discomfort

Silica desiccant is added to improve flow in powdered foods. It naturally occurs in water, where it may help develop resistance against developing senility. Actually, silicon dioxide is the real name of silica, and that is the main component of sand.

As we know silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable, and chemically inactive. However, some of the granules may be combined with a moisture indicator, such as cobalt (II) chloride, it is carcinogenic. It can give color to the gel. Cobalt chloride is deep blue, that is the reason for blue colored silica gel when dry (anhydrous) and pink when moist (hydrated).

This is the reason for silica gel packets are labeled as dangerous or poisonous when eaten or "Do not eat". Silica gel is safe, it does not cause silicosis. But crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis. Generally, silica gel is assuming as a non-dangerous substance because of these reasons, however, keep it out of your children.
