Carabiner

Carabiners come in four characteristic shapes:

Oval: Symmetric. Most basic and utilitarian. Carabiners have smooth regular curves on equipment and it allows easy repositioning of loads. It has disadvantages, it is a load is shared equally on both the strong solid spine and the weaker gated axis.

D: The carabiner's strongest axis is its spine. Asymmetric shape transfers the majority of the load onto there. Offset-D: Offset D is a variant of a D. It has a greater asymmetry, that allows for a wider gate opening.

Pear/HMS: Wider and rounded shape at the top than offset-D's, and typically larger. Used for belaying with a munter hitch, and with some types of the belay device. HMS carabiners are the largest carabiner, that can also be used for rappelling. It can be used with a munter hitch (the size is needed to accommodate the hitch with two strands of rope). These are usually the heaviest carabiners.

Locking mechanisms

Locking mechanisms for carabiners can be classified as 3 categories: auto-locking, manual locking, and non-locking.
