One of the best moisture-absorbing solutions is desiccant. It is a non-toxic product. Normally it doesn't have any taste. However, it is not good for health. Therefore we can see that on the packet the manufacturers will indicate that "Do not eat".
While the contents of a silica gel packet are basically harmless, it would be a rather unpleasant experience to attempt to consume the silica crystals. Keep away it from the child. It is widely using as a moisture absorbing solution. It is non-reactant to mostly all of the products.
Silica gel is having high melting and operating point. The
solubility of silicon dioxide in water strongly depends on its
crystalline form and is three-four times higher for silica than quartz; as a
function of temperature, it peaks around 340 °C. Fused quartz or
amalgamated silicon dioxide are glass consisting of silicon dioxide in
amorphous (non-crystalline) type. It differs from ancient glasses containing
no alternative ingredients, which are typically added to glass to
lower the melt temperature. Fused silicon dioxide,
therefore, has high operating and melting temperatures.
Desiccants are available in different types based on their application. For example, if we are purchasing desiccants for protecting our dried nuts and our electronic Camera lens, both applications are different. In the market, we can find different products of Silica gel for food protection and for electronics protection.
Normally, the desiccant which is used to protect food products like dried nuts and bread, are Oxy-Guard oxygen absorbers. It can remove oxygen from the packets or from the tins to keep the food item as fresh. By removing moisture content, we can increase the shelf life of these items.
Similarly, for protecting electronic devices like laptops, cameras or mobile phones by avoiding moisture content, normal desiccant or silica gel packets are placing inside the bag or pouch. If our mobile screens or camera lenses having water present during the rainy season, to remove it we can place it together with a silica packet in a tight bag.
