Properties of Orange Silica Gel

Properties of Orange Silica Gel

Silica Gel is polar or non-polar?

The presence of hydroxyl groups renders the surface of silica gel highly polar. If an organic analyte is having polar functionality, then it will strongly interact with the surface of the gel particle and if it is having non-polar functionality, then it will interact only weakly.

Normally silica gel is an inactive agent. But silica gel is a polar adsorbent and being slightly acidic in nature, it has a powerful capacity to absorb basic contents that may be present in the material that needs separation or purification. It is also well known for its role in reversed-phase partition chromatography.

Silica gel versus Alumina for the stationary phase
Alumina is slightly basic, so it will retain acidic compounds more strongly. It is good for the separation of components that are weakly or moderately polar and the purification of amines. Absorbent particle size affects how the solvent flows through the column.

Orange Silica gel: Silica gel normally appears in 3 different colors. Colorless or white-colored silica gel, blue silica gel, and orange silica gel. Orange silica gel is mainly used for silica gel breather. It is also known as a transformer breather.

FUNCTION OF SILICA GEL BREATHER:-
The main function of Silica Gel Breather is to dehydrate or remove moisture from the air & to remove dust particles of the air breathed in by the transformer.

Advantages & Benefits of Orange Silica Gel:-
1Indicating the status of silica gel without cobalt chloride.
2Non - toxic and non-flammable silica gel
3Environmental friendly type
4Acceptable worldwide especially in European countries.
5Higher absorption Capacity at low RH
