Cable gland and junction box

Cable Gland and Junction Box

Cable connections sometimes getting problems. Many problems can be avoided if the cables are installed properly. Cable glands are designed to prevent cable damage and ensure a waterproof transit through a bulkhead or deck. A significant number of problems are experienced when water gets in through deck fittings.

If small or single insulated cables are installed, it is virtually impossible to adequately seal them in cable glands. To overcome this problem use circular, multicore cables if possible. Or use the consolidation procedure to make a cable loom that can be put through a deck gland. We need to take deck material into account before selecting the cable gland.

Steel decks require a different cable gland type than fiberglass, foam-sandwich decks. The major problems are the use of single insulated untinned cables, generally of an underrated conductor size. Small conductor sizes cause various voltage drop problems with unacceptable low light outputs as a result.

Junction Box:

The most common area of failure is a junction box. If mounted inside the vessel, A good water-resistant box should be installed. If mounted externally and this should only be a last resort, a waterproof box is required.

Always leave a loop when inserting cables into the box. If water does travel down the loom, this will drop off the bottom of the loop and will not enter and corrode the junction box terminals or connections. Depends on the size of the junction box, it can handle various numbers of cables and wires.

Junction boxes are generally placing outside of the building for easy and better access. It is used to secure the connections and it provides a safety barrier. The envelope of the junction box can be a plastic or metal box. Inside the box, two or more wires are mounted for the secured connections.
